Redemption Hills

Welcome to Redemption Hills

Map of Redemption Hills (not to exact scale)

Redemption Hills was founded only recently, in the fall of 1849, after the fall of Devil’s Perch.  The Perch, founded by criminals, was plagued by troubles and disasters for years. After a devastating plague, the Republican Army bombarded and burned the town, finally destroying it. Refugees moved ten miles north to found a new town. After the sinful living in the Perch, the survivors determined that it was God’s will that the Perch be destroyed.  Therefore, they created their new town in the model of clean, decent living.

A long list of morality guidelines structure the lives of the Redemption Hills citizen. These exist in addition to the normal laws, and can be enforced by any concerned citizen.  The guidelines outlaw alcohol, gambling, prostitution, and restrict language, clothing, and mannerisms.  A full list (thus far) can be read here.

Folks question how a town on the edge of the Wasteland can keep such laws in action. With ex-convicts, exiles, Celestials and other unsavories seeking refuge in the west, it seems just a matter of time before indecent living creeps back in. The town itself continues its logging, under Cole Logging & Enterprise, and makes a good living at it.  To the north, the foothills of the Great Northern Mountains begin, and the Snake River borders the town to the west. The river is also the border to the Wasteland, and folks in the Hills can look out their window and see the desiccated landscape.

The town is governed by the Decency Bureau, made up of eight concerned citizens (including Sheriff Devereaux). Popular opinion clings to the new morality, hoping it will save them from the ills suffered in the Perch. Many, though, feel it’s only a matter of time before the old curse comes back to haunt them.
